Preparation
Ensure all surfaces to be painted are clean, dry and free from dirt, debris or any other surface contaminants. Ronseal Garden Paint is not suitable for use on plastics, cast iron or areas subjected to foot traffic, such as decking boards.

How to prepare new wood
Unfinished softwoods can be painted straight away as long as they do not have a previous wax, oil or silicone finish
All other woods should be left to weather for 6 weeks
Lightly sand to remove surface fibres and splinters
Wipe the wood over with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirit
Oily hardwoods should be painted soon after being wiped down with meths
How to prepare old garden wood
Old coating type finishes such as paints, varnishes and varnish type stains must be fully removed by sanding or with a product stripper / remover prior to painting.

Remove all traces of mould, algae and fungi with a stiff brush or scraper
Treat areas affected by mould, algae and fungi with a mould and mildew remover
Wood can be cleaned with a suitable, exterior wood cleaner, prior to painting, if required
Any instances of wet rot can be treated with Ronseal Wet Rot Wood Hardener, and any existing woodworm eradicated with Ronseal Woodworm Killer
Any decayed wood should be removed and replaced with clean, sound timber
Make good any holes or minor imperfections with Ronseal High Performance Wood Filler or Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler
Treat wood with a suitable wax, oil and silicon-free exterior wood preservative, if required
Where possible, preserve all sides including end grain prior to application of Ronseal Garden Paint
Ensure that the wood is fully dry before painting
For best results, prime all wooden surfaces with Ronseal All Surface Primer and Undercoat – Exterior before applying Ronseal Garden Paint.

Preparing Terracotta
Terracotta pots and other surfaces may need a good sanding / wire-brushing as they are often treated or glazed to protect them from rain and frost damage. These treatments will reduce adhesion of the paint to the surface.

Weathered terracotta needs to be water-bead tested. If the water beads on the surface, sanding will be required to remove the surface coating before painting. If the water soaks in to the Terracotta, then the paint can be applied directly.

Preparing metal
Metal needs a suitable primer before painting with Ronseal Garden Paint. Use grey primer under darker colours, and white primer under lighter colours.

Preparing brick or stone
Remove any dust or loose material with a stiff brush before painting. This product is not suitable for walls prone to damp.

Application
Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application to ensure a consistent finish.

Apply a thin, even coat of Ronseal Garden Paint, following the grain appropriately with a synthetic brush (such as the Ronseal Fence Life Brush) or microfibre roller.
Allow the first coat to dry for 4 hours
Apply a second and third coat as above
If painting wooden garden furniture, allow 2 to 3 days before using or adding cushions and other soft furnishings.
Top Tips: Always do a test area to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the tin at all times. Don’t apply in wet conditions or if rain, frost or snow is likely

Aftercare
Regular Cleaning
Wooden surfaces painted with Ronseal Garden Paint can be wiped clean with a damp, lint-free cloth and cleaned at regular intervals with a suitable, exterior wood cleaner, as required.

Maintenance
If the finish becomes worn or tired looking over time, simply apply a fresh coat of Garden Paint, following the Preparation and Application instructions above.

F.A.Q.
Q. Does Ronseal Garden Paint need an undercoat or primer?

A. If you are using Garden Paint on a metal surface then you will need an appropriate primer such as Hammerite, otherwise you can simply get painting directly onto the wood.

Q. Is Ronseal safe for animals?

A. Once dry, this is safe for pets and animals

Q. Can Garden paint be spray applied?

It’s thicker formula makes it less likely to drip when applying to vertical surfaces with a brush, but due to this we would not recommend using with a sprayer as it will likely clog.
